Telephoned

There is a long history of ironic, white covers of popular hip-hop and R&B tracks — from Dynamite Hack singing “Boyz in the Hood” in golf sweaters and flip flops, to Little Boots’ recent melancholic cover of Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite.” In general, these attempts range from the retarded to the horribly offensive — with the rare creative or interesting recreation emerging here and there.
The new Fool’s Gold-repped artist Telephoned has recently joined membership into this group and whether they are one of the rare, successful entries into the sub-genre, I will let you be the judge. One thing I can say for Telephoned is that its members are talented. The group is a collaboration between DJ/Producer Sammy Bananas and DJ/Singer Maggie Horn. Bananas has put out a number of solid dance tracks in the past two years, including a pretty wicked remix of Passion Pit’s “The Reeling.”

Erol Alkan

This week marks the debut performance of international superstar DJ Erol Alkan. If you’ve never heard of the guy, I’m not sure what to tell you. For the past ten-plus years, Alkan has been steadily churning out dancefloor bangers, remixing the likes of Justice, Interpol, Mylo, Bloc Party, The Chemical Brothers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Klaxons, Franz Ferdinand, et al, and playing festivals around the globe. Named Mixmag’s “DJ of the Year” in 2006, Alkan has recently begun releasing his first original singles, including his collab with Boys Noize (mp3 below).
Mix of the Month

2010 is but a few weeks old and already we’ve seen the release of a number of really bangin’ mixes. My favorite thus far is a tech-house mix from D.C. duo Nadastrom. Originally posted as a promo mix for New York monthly Flashing Lights, which includes Fool’s Gold’s Nick Catchdubs, Night Shifter’s Jess Jubilee and The Rub’s DJ Ayres.

Mike the 2600 King

Friends are always surprised when I tell them that hip-hop actually began in Minnesota. And even more surprised when I tell that that’s not true and I just made it up. One man very familiar with hip-hop’s alleged birthplace is Land O’ Lakes resident, Mike the 2600 King.
Coming off the success of the first two Do It To It records, Mike just released his first solo EP “Ready to Rock” this month and its packed with banging funk jams. You can buy the digi-EP here.
Mike will also be returning to The City January 9th to play Triple Crown alongside Jinder and The Projects resident and Hacksaw founder Shane King. More info on that show is available over at Hacksaw.

Solid Gold LovE!

This year, the Solid Gold Jacuzzi was arguably the biggest, baddest, goldest float at Civic Center. With a scissor lift raising the DJ booth 30ft in the air, towering over City Hall, there’s now doubt it was the most memorable. The Gold JaCREWzzi met up early Sat AM to be sprayed, painted, stenciled, glittered and dolled up, then piled onto the beautiful 40ft float, stacked with theProjects beautifully adorned golden Turbosound. By noon Amp Live was on the decks, with hundreds of gold beauties rocking out and ready to parade down Market Street.

Saturday was a blur of rave bears, confetti and creepy photographers all harmoniously grooving to the same wicked beats from Sleazemore, Morale, Nisus, Shane King, Swayzee, Eric Sharp and the one and only Groove Armada! For those lucky enough to get on the float, the party was non stop. For those in the crowd, the slamming bodies and screaming fans only intensified once the epic gold scissor lift began to tower up, up and away.

Once Civic Center died down, the party moved to Mezzanine, where Solid Gold Jacuzzi teamed up with Om Records to produce one of the most memorable LovEvolution after party’s. Tired faces dripping gold got their second wind and danced like there was no tomorrow with DJ after DJ playing the best electro in the city. With acts like Trackademicks, Amp Live, DJ Heather and LA Riots, it was a proud day for Electronic Music in San Francisco.
With a turnout of about 80,000 people, LovEvolution was an epic success, and Solid Gold Jacuzzi made it’s mark. Check out theProjects gallery for photos and videos of the event, and be sure to check back, we’ve got lots more to come!

Solid Gold Jacuzzi Party @ Supperclub Goes Off!
If you were at the Solid Gold Party, a fundraiser for the 2009 Lovefest float, you witnessed the choas and calamity that ensued. With an incredible DJ lineup featuring Cocheze, Nisus, Sleazemore, Rchrd Oh!?, Shane King, Morale, Eric Sharp, and LA’s Heist DJ’s, the jams were booming all night.

San Franpsycho came out and did some live screen printing and of course, there was the Jacuzzi nestled in its gold throne, bubbling with soothingly warm water all night.
