theProject’s own prolific producer NISUS has been hard at work cranking out remixes for your lovely ears to hear. Below is his remix of Caribou’s “Odessa”, off their new album Swim. The original Caribou track is pretty amazers to begin with (the whole album is really), and with the addition of some 808 style drums and a few BPM fluctuations here and there, Nisus’ edit is totally sick. I dig it.

Can I say that? The guy is awesome, like weird Tiga shit awesome. And his new track “Bang Bang Bang”…is amazing. I so dig it. Soo soo soo good. Especially if you watch the Creators Project interview where Mark explains the process of making his new record. There are so many classic Mark Ronson tid bits and lines. Ive watched it like 6 times. Really. You can check it out here.

The real reason I think he is a genius, is because his first single “Bang Bang Bang” off the new record is catchy as hell and the video is ohh soo smooth. Classic analog, boombox, vhs, meets Tron in a 1974 Japanese TV Studio. Yeah, it’s like that.

Here’s the best part. I felt like I knew the lyrics, like from when I was a kid. So I did what every self respecting intellect would do: I Googled it. Low and behold, the lyrics stem from a French Canadian kid’s song, which makes perfect sense, seeing as i have a French speaking mother. So check out this amazing little piece of animation:

The new album SBTRKT comes out July 12th, and I can hardly wait.

As far as corporate sponsorship goes, Scion is kinda killing it. I’ve gathered quite a little collection of Scion themed SWAG over the past few years from various parties. I’ve got two adorable pairs of pink Scion panties that read “What Moves You” on the ass (hey, its better than “juicy”), i’ve got sampler CDs galore, earplugs for my earholes, and several tubes of SPF 15 which have been INSRTUMENTAL in my not getting cancer. That’s just to name a few.

This Thursday Scion brings us a massive multi-leveled, multi-faceted, multi-talented launch party for their über-tech new site www.scionify.us. The lineup is RETARDED. Promoters are always saying the lineup is retarded, but really…this one is. The lineup includes the best local DJ’s representing the best styles of music! We’re doing it Euro style. Tired of Electro? Check out some Hip Hop. Want some dubstep, well by all means do so! All in the same damn venue!

There will be three rooms of incredible music. The main room will feature ‘Electro/Future Funk’ with the Solid Gold Jacuzzi DJ’s. These are the guys that brought you the 50ft scissor lift DJ booth at LovEvolution last year. DJ’s Shane King, Swayzee, Nisus, Eric Sharp and Sleazemore have been throwing gold themed parties for a two years now, and these dudes will destroy you. Yeah, it’s like that. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, DJ Craze will be headlining the room, so bring your A-Game.

Gaslamp Killer will be crushing the Catacombs along with locals Maneesh The Twister and Dials of Change the Beat. Lastly we’ve got some sweet, sweet Disco and Soul in the Destiny Lounge with White Girl Lust of Solid Bump along with Honey Soundsystem and Hakobo.

WHEW! All that plus Interactive Fashion Installations by Chillin’ Productions and Art Environments by ArtNowSF. BUT, there’s a catch (there’s ALWAYS a catch.) Wait for it…..

THIS EVENT IS FREE. Thats right. FREE.

And dammit free never felt so good! So you’ve got not excuse. A massive free party this thursday with the best music art fashion and *ahem* visuals this town has seen.

*Admission is first come first serve. You must RSVP to be admitted. Early arrival is recommended to guarantee entry*

Thursday, June 17 10:00PM, Temple Nightclub, San Francisco

Come out and support! I’ll see you there

As a DJ, over the years I’ve developed a few routines that I like to break out here and there to keep my sets interesting. Sometimes I do this thing where I’ll play the sample source and mix it into the song using the sample. I call it “Single City.” Other times I’ll loop a section of lyrics and mix that into another song with the same or similar lyrics. I call this “Swing City. How do we filter out the teases? We don’t let them in. This goes for the guys, too, because sometimes the guys are tapped out. But check your lease man, because you’re living in “Fuck City!”

One better-known DJ who has also discovered the wonders of “Single City” (aka a standard DJ routine) is NYC’s Neil Armstrong, founding member of the 5th Platoon DJ collective and Jay-Z’s tour DJ. Armstrong has also appeared on Letterman, Carson Daly (is that still a show?), at the NBA All-Star Game and the Olympic Games.

Additionally, he has been steadily churning out mixtapes for over a decade now, among them Originals, which takes the sample->sample source idea to new levels and DNA of The Blueprint, which serves as Armstrong’s personal tribute to his current MC (both are available for download after the jump).

ArtNowSF is bringing Neil Armstrong to Manor West this Thursday (4/29), along with DJs Lex (Souls of Mischief) and Beats Me (distortion 2 static). Advance tix are 10 bucks and you can buy them here.

Here are the mixtapes. Enjoy:

There is a long history of ironic, white covers of popular hip-hop and R&B tracks — from Dynamite Hack singing “Boyz in the Hood” in golf sweaters and flip flops, to Little Boots’ recent melancholic cover of Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite.” In general, these attempts range from the retarded to the horribly offensive — with the rare creative or interesting recreation emerging here and there.

The new Fool’s Gold-repped artist Telephoned has recently joined membership into this group and whether they are one of the rare, successful entries into the sub-genre, I will let you be the judge. One thing I can say for Telephoned is that its members are talented. The group is a collaboration between DJ/Producer Sammy Bananas and DJ/Singer Maggie Horn. Bananas has put out a number of solid dance tracks in the past two years, including a pretty wicked remix of Passion Pit’s “The Reeling.”

(mp3s after the jump)

The duo will appear this Wednesday at Harlot, for MW004 presented by Hacksaw Entertainment. There will be a hosted bar from 7-10 and entry is free as long as you RSVP here.

Friends of The Projects Shane King (Hacksaw Ent) and White Girl Lust (Solid Bump) will provide support. This should definitely be a quality hump day party.

A couple of things about ducks: 1) the males have giant, corkscrew-shaped penises and 2) they have an unfortunate penchant for gang-rape.

While I was in college, a few friends and I had just finished a delicious and affordable meal at a South Bay Chili’s when we witnessed one of the more disturbing spectacles of our young lives. A group of ducks were gathered near the edge of the parking lot and appeared to be reenacting a scene from “The Accused.” As we walked closer, we saw two ducks holding down the head of what we assumed was the female duck, while a third ravaged her from the rear. This continued for a few moments until the lucky duck (!) got off, withdrew and swaggered off down to the adjacent stream, followed by his accomplices.

At the time we were shocked, but apparently gang rape is as much a part of being a duck as flying through rainbows is part of being a unicorn. Also, female ducks have spiral vaginas with trap doors to mislead duck rapists. All of these things are true (except the part about the unicorn) and you can read all about it here.

(Here comes the segue… wait for it…)

Speaking of ducks, Dirty Bird’s Martin Brothers just released a track with the word duck in the title and hey! one of them is playing at Lights Down Low tomorrow night, 4/24, at Triple Crown.

Anyone that’s followed dance music in San Francisco knows Christian Martin, who most recently appeared among the buffalo at the latest of the fabled Dirtybird BBQ’s this past Sunday in Golden Gate Park.

Headlining alongside Martin is Vancouver’s Felix Cartal, who returns to LDL where once he made his San Francisco debut. Since then, Cartal has blown up as a producer and last month released his first full length album on Dim Mak under the (hopefully) prophetic title, “Popular Music.” I haven’t caught Cartal live, but according to my Projects counterpart DJ Nisus, Cartal put on one of the best performances that he saw last year when he appeared at Ruby Skye.

Providing support is LDL resident Sleazemore, as well as LXNDR (Bad Neighbors) and KONNECT (Trust). Advance tickets are $10 and available here.

Here’s a little sample. Enjoy:

This year, Coachella brought the best of this years hottest artists into one arena on 5 stages over 3 days in a titillating, chaotic and full fledged maniacal music exhibition.

The Projects were in attendance, focusing mainly on electronic acts, but we got a full range of the best performances…as follows:

© sleepydoll

Thom Yorke

This man is a saint. A muppet. A full fledged music genie. You could not ask for a more stripped down, humble performer. Echoing perfect lyrics over stunning piano and guitar sections, Thom Yorke was easily the highlight of the festival. Rumors had been circling about supposed on-stage duets (including David Bowie…can you imagine??) Alas, it was just Thom and Flea, with the Atoms of Peace. After we had been bouncing from high energy act to high energy act, Thom Yorke seemed to breathe life into the audience, offering a calm and encouraging perspective. He is simply classic and timeless. Wait, isn’t that what music is supposed to be? Oh yeah. Thom Yorke…you win Coachella.

Die Antwoord, Major Lazer, Fever Ray and more after the jump…

© Guy Eppel

Die Antwoord

Runner up for best act at Coachella. Hardly an act at all, Die fokken Antwoord set the crowd at ease to see they are really, truly, freaks of the civilized world with an incredibly fresh sound. Their live show felt so good. Strong thumping beats with solid bass, their twenty minute set was a last minute addition squeezed between Z-Trip and 2ManyDJs; Die Antwoord blew them both out of the water. Both Ninja and Yo-Landi held the crowds energy hostage at redline during their entire six-song set. Flipping the bird, spitting out crazy South Afrrrrikaan slang, and a couple of young, confused, aimless, chubby boys with masks shaking their thang around in nothin but boxers, were just a few of the highlights of the show.

Many mysteries remain about this powerful new trio (dont forget DJ Hi-Tek), like who they are (Max.TV), who does their hair (scarhair.com) or who where they get their crazy designed tracksuits (animations based on the work of Roger Ballen.) One thing is for sure…Die Antwoord is the best fake new live act of the year. Or ever.

© jaredeberhardt

Major Lazer

Major Lazer is a the power group booty fusion of Diplo, Switch and whichever MC maniacal lyricist they currently have their eye on. After being totally taken by their “Pon de Flor” track and eventually the music video (by director Eric Wareheim ) I have been obsessed with this power group and their power daggering, alongside MC Skerrit Bwoy. Their live performance was everything I expected it to be. Totally energetic, constant choas, dagger smashing, booty crushing, lazer shooting music. Switch and Diplo were bored to tears, chain-smoking and train wrecking through tracks. Totally expected. MC Skerrit Bwoy was wild, totally outrageous and under control, along with. He never missed a beat and climbed every available truss he cold find. His all star moment was when he threw down the dagger ladder into the press area, ran to the top, only to cause the entire ladder to sway heavily before stage diving off into the audience. EPIC. “Don’t make me get the ladder” is a new threat in our house now.

Plastikman

This all new live hardware set by German minimal producer Richie Hawtin was an excellent closer to the Coachella festival. Hawtin apparently attempted the project years ago, but felt the technology was just not available to do what he wanted to do. At last, things have changed. His all new live set features an LED wrap-around screen, which encompasses Hawtin and his mountain o’ hardware, in a cylindrical vault, displaying interactive modern visuals. The show as a whole was phenomenal. The lights and visuals were in in perfect synconicity with the music. The beats were thick, deep, and baaasssyyyy. At times, they seemed to penetrate your chest and corkscrew every hair on your body until your earplugs felt they were going to pop like a champaign cork in rap music video. The set was a bit too minimal for my flavor, even repetitive in some instances. Overall, the Plastikman show was a huge lesson in new music and interactive visual technology and I highly recommend seeing him when you can.

Donald Glaude

As far as DJ sets go, Donald Glaude was a total shocker. We wandered into the Heineken tent around 7:00 on Sunday and Donald Glaude was not just killing, he wasn’t destroying, he was literally brutally massacring every person in the dome. We’ve always thought him to be a typical house DJ, based on the venues he plays the DJs he collaborates with, but Donald Glaude was doing something in the dome we had not seen in a while. He was actually DJing. He was massively skillful in his mixing, totally graceful in his track selection, and all around the best party DJ we heard at Coachella. People were losing their peanuts and going bananas!!!! BANANAS!!!! I did visuals for D.Glaude a while back at Ruby Skye and remember him peaking my interest but not knowing much about him. This may have been a special set where he felt he cold really left loose…but my god its good to hear underground electronic music being played out to the masses. Dear Mr. Glaude…thank you. Sincerely, DJ Nisus and VJ Vizibelle. We love you.

Bassnectar

It’s Saturday, around 8:00, and we are snacking on some tasty Thai food (shout out to The Eggroll People! Thanks for keeping us alive.) Suddenly, we feel the rumble. Slowly, the melody kicks in. I looked over and for a second i thought “OH Dear God! The Mojave tent is on fire!! Somebody help them! It must be a terrorist attack-…Oh wait, its just Bassnectar.” I feel like Bassnectar gets a bad wrap. YES he attracts hippies. YES they smell bad, dont shave and talk about ‘antioxidents’ but Bassnectar is a good producer, and there’s no denying that. He has found his neich. As the name implys, he properly combines his retarded bass-lines with humming melodies that make it easy for a little lady like myself to sway over and thrash to. He closed his set with a brand new remix of Metallica’s “Seek and Destroy.” One again…EPIC.

2ManyDJs

I don’t even know what to say about these guys. They have been like the gateway act into electronic music for so many people. They have been held in such high regard for so long, but their performance at Cochella this year…well…sucked. Once Die Antwoord finished, the crowd was tired, but willing and ready. The stagehands rushed the stage, pulled apart every monitor, DJ booth and mic stand and after reassembling it backstage with the addition of some pretty lights, began hurriedly reassembling it all as the show began. Stephen walked out onto the stage holding a small fm radio, switching dials, until he finally tuned into the beginning of their set. Just as the booth was wheeled out, he set his radio down and began to play. Davide cued the CDs while Stephen mixed…well, tried painfully to mix is more like it. It was on par or worse than Switch and Diplo. The track selection (poor as they were) was circa 2007 and unlike good wine, their set did not improve with time. Kind of a let down.

© sleepdoll

Fever Ray

I have been waiting to see Fever Ray for a loong time. I always seem to miss them when they are in town. I have been obsessed with the new album, listening to it on repeat and pouring over remixes. I arrived at coachella 5mins before their set. Literally got out of the car after a 9 hour drive and booked ass to get to Sahara. Their show was mellow. The tent was packed and it was difficult to see the elaborate costumes. They had these awesome lamps that were pulsing to the beat. It was fun, but sadly similar to the album. It would have been nice to hear some switch-ups, or remixes or slight differences. Regardless, Fever Ray was phonomenal

© cuzinmank

Deadmau5

Deadmau5 played in a classic Daft Punk-like DJ booth that was tipped over with tons of visuals everywhwere…even on his little mouse head. My initial though while watching Deadmau5 was why was he not remixing live his tracks? Don’t get me wrong, his set was good, but a common theme at Coachella always seems to be musicians and DJs playing exactly what’s on their CD. No riffs, no remixing, no solos. Granted his light show and the booth he was nestled inside of were pretty awesome. I guess i’ve never been much of a fan of Deadmau5. It always seems like the potential is there but he just doenst quite get me. Even the visuals content was not amazing. Fast? Yes. Beat matched? Of Course. Interesting and dynamic (aka modern)? Not very much. It was a good party and the crowd dug it. It was a bummer that he took his mouse head off at the end…I was really beginning to believe he was a mouse. Shucks.

Years before I got into smoking weed, drinking malt liquor and doing drive-bys, The Chronic was released and I, like every other 12 year-old boy on my block, quickly put away the Cooleyhighharmony and jumped full force into G-Funk. It wasn’t that suburban white kids like me could really relate to the content, or that we held real animosity toward EZ or Tim Dog (or knew who Tim Dog was). Instead, it was Dre’s flawless production and the smooth, at-times angry lyrical flow of the Death Row camp that had me singing “bitches ain’t shit” as I rode my sweet GT bicycle home from school.

It’s been 18 years (do the math) and there finally seems to be real evidence that the often-talked-about, never-produced album “Detox” might actually see release this year. Scott Storch, who has apparently been doing some detoxing himself, earlier this month mentioned that the release of the album’s first single “Under Pressure,” which features Jay-Z, should happen sometime this summer.

With an album from Big Boi also set to drop in the summer months, this could be a good year for the aging stars of rap. In anticipation of these alleged releases, here are some olllllld throwback mixes from two of hip-hop’s best known DJs.

(mp3s after the jump)

The first, an impressive set in two parts (and on four decks) by the aforementioned Dre, circa 1987 — pre-Chronic, pre-Snoop, pre-NWA, pre-Dr. Pepper. The second comes from the always solid DJ Riz of Crooklyn Clan fame, recorded on Tim Westwood’s show on the BBC. And yes, he does mix Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Game” in there (aka the song that inspired the entire the XX album). I shouldn’t have to say that these are “all-vinyl” mixes, but hey! They are!

Oh, and here’s a bonus freestyle from a young Snoop Doggy Dogg on the Arsenio Hall show. Pretty sick:
